Pipe Major Sandy Davidson, M.B.E

It is with great sadness that I have to announce the sudden death of Pipe Major Sandy Davidson, M.B.E.

Sandy was Instrumental Tutor (Bagpipes) for Central Region, latterly Stirling Council and Pipe Major of Stirling and District Schools Pipe Band from 1984 to 2007, following his time served with the Scots Guards.  Sandy served with the Scots Guards for 22 years during a very special time in the regiments piping history.  He was originally a piper in the 1st Battalion Scots Guards under Pipe Major Angus MacDonald M.B.E and he later became Pipe Major himself of the 2nd Battalion Scots Guards, a band boasting famous pipers such as P/M Jimmy Banks M.B.E and Major Gavin Stoddart B.E.M, M.B.E.

Sandy was a great perfectionist, demanding from his pupils that the basic rudiments of the instrument were solid and fluent.  After retiring, Sandy continued to use his vast amount of knowledge to enhance piping in Scotland.  He was a piper in the Scots Guards Association Pipe Band, where he also held the post of secretary.  He could be seen regularly behind the judges desk at many a junior solo contest where he would listen intently to every single competitor and give valuable feedback to the youngsters.

On a personal note, Sandy was a huge help to me when I took over the post of Instrumental Tutor for Stirling Council following his retirement.  The administrative paperwork that he passed onto myself was exceptionally organised.  His timetable ran like military precision and he was always on the other end of the phone had I any queries surrounding my post.  Having been fortunate to work with many of his pupils after his retirement, I can honestly say that he had a hugely positive impact on the young people that he taught through his time with Stirling Council.

A true gentleman in every sense, he will be sorely missed by many.

Mr Chris Gibb
